[signed and numbered in pencil on back, 1/50 - 50/50] in 2011 vanessa winship was the recipient of the henri cartier bresson award which funds an artist to pursue a new photographic project. for over a year winship travelled across the united states, from california to virginia, new mexico to montana, in pursuit of the fabled ‘american dream’. she dances on jackson presents a conversation, a lyrical and lilting interaction between landscape and portrait exploring the vastness of the united states and attempting to understand the link between a territory and its inhabitants. for winship this relationship is inextricable; places accrue particular meanings according to the people she meets, what she sees, and by what's happening to her personally. each human encounter, sound and smell adds extra dimensions to her work and the resulting photographs. she dances on jackson marks a progression. stylistically similar to her previous work using black and white film and a large format camera, winship’s portraits remain arresting and unnerving but this body of work reveals her to also be a skilled landscape photographer. for winship photography is a process of literacy, a path by which she understands life. her intimate approach enables the reader to glimpse the world as she sees it, if only for a moment. mack books 144 pages 64 illustrations 24 cm x 27 cm printed linen hardback housed in a printed linen slipcase, with a signed and numbered print may 2018 ; -- -- andante alex majoli publisher’s description andante is the catalogue of an exhibition that goes from 1985 to 2018, in which the artist alex majoli researches the human soul and the most obscure elements of society. the itinerary ends with teatro, exploring the theatricality that lies in everyday’s life, where the borders between reality and fiction become blurred. the subtle line between reality and theatre, documentary and art, human behaviour and acting is the exact friction that amazes and makes him go back on the streets and in the places where the human condition is put into question. even in the most tragic of miseries, he is capable to find the theatre, the pride and, most of all, the greatness of human soul. the career of alex majoli, member of the prestigious magnum photos starts very early in the atelier of casadio and malanca. it is only after having photographed the closing of the renowned mental institution on the island of leros in greece that he finds his identity as an artist, giving birth to his first namesake monography leros. the initial interest of the artist in the theories of the pioneer of the modern concept of mental health franco basaglia, who is also famous for having abolished mental hospitals in italy, pushes him to go to brasil, where the theories are enthusiastically adopted. alex majoli has photographed the south american country for twenty years, collecting a series of images depicting the complex brazilian society in the project tudo bom, which is still in progress. between the 1990s and the 2000s, he worked mainly for international publishing houses. majoli can be considered a provocateur for the images he uses: he represents the theatrical dynamics of life, the human actions seem to take inspiration from a theatre show and he emphasizes all the drama of everyday’s life using artificial light. his photos become scenes where people in their “performance/life” express themselves on what becomes an undeclared stage or film set. publisher cesura publish size: 140 x 210 mm 74 pages, 40 photographs first edition of 700 ; -- -- la lune de payne (signed) ljubisa danilovic publisher's description (poorly translated!) in 2015, ljubisa danilovic published le desert russe with editions lamaindonne. this title, popular with the public and with critics, quickly went out of print. three years later, her new publication brings to light a very difference aspect of her work. over the last few years, danilovic has undertaken several journeys in the danube delta and la lune de payne gives a surprising and delicate portrait of this area – a country of sky and water where time seems to slow down, where the heart beats more calmly and the soul is at peace. photographs close to their subject, without embellishment. the large grey palette of these images confer a great softness and melancholy. a series from a great artist. original en 2015, ljubisa danilovic publiait le désert russe aux éditions lamaindonne. le livre, salué par le public et la critique, est aujourd’hui épuisé. trois ans plus tard, la lune de payne , sa nouvelle publication, donne à voir une facette radicalement différente du travail du photographe. ljubisa danilovic a effectué ces dernières années plusieurs voyages dans le delta du danube et nous offre avec ce livre un portrait surprenant et délicat de ce lieu. un pays de ciel et d’eau où le temps semble se ralentir, où le coeur se met à battre plus tranquillement et où l’esprit s’apaise. des photographies au plus proche du sujet, sans fioritures aucune, qui vont à l’essentiel. la large palette de gris des photographies leur confère une grande douceur et une certaine mélancolie. une série d’une belle maîtrise artistique… publisher: lamaindonne edition size: 216 x 260 mm 100 pages, 50 photographs ; -- -- street. life. photography edited by sabine schnakenberg overseas deliveries please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates. publisher’s description fleetingly flashed, meticulously observed, packed with intoxicating energy, shock frozen, voyeuristically charged, dramatically overstated, romantically wild, tragic, comical, broodingly absent, and strangely horrific – the street, that urban space experienced directly and mundanely as an urban living environment, is by far one of the most scintillating and multifaceted subjects of photography. the exhibition street. life. photography, organized in conjunction with the triennial of photography, features fifty-two photographic positions with roughly 350 works from the f. c. gundlach and falckenberg collections, as well as numerous loans and cooperation projects with contemporary artists. it is divided into seven thematic groups: street life, crashes, public transfer, urban space, lines and signs, anonymity, and alienation. emancipated from henri cartier-bresson’s decisive moment , new narrative tendencies of street photography brush aside the concentration on photographic testimony. photo-historical icons and contemporary positions mutually charge each other and, in a deliberately subjective overview, provide information on social phenomena photographically manifested on the street over the past seventy years. size: 240 x 300 mm 244 pages ca. 194 color andblack & white illustrations english, german ; -- -- the shot that made me compiled by peter dench publisher’s description the shot that made me is a collection of photographs and stories from world-renowned photographers about the photograph that had the greatest impact on their career. some of the photographers featured know exactly what their image is and when it was taken. others attribute it more vaguely. the answers in this heroically revealing and intimate book are as diverse as the photographers questioned. the result is a unique and compelling insight into why they became and continue to be, masters of photography. the book is compiled by peter dench is an english photographer and curator with over 20 years experience, represented worldwide by verbatim. dench has published five visual monographs, the dench dozen: great britons of photography vol. 1 (2016); dench does dallas (2015), the british abroad (2015) alcohol & england (2014) and england uncensored (2012). publisher: schilt publishing size: 220 x 240 mm 216 pages with approx. 100 photographs in full colour ; -- -- scrublands antoine bruy publisher’s description while hitchhiking across the length and breadth of france, antoine bruy met men and women who, in ardèche and lozère, aspire to live in the most self-sufficient way possible. inspired by this approach, he volunteered within a network that lists initiatives based on biodynamic agriculture and permaculture. he was hosted in communities that enabled him to meet these men and women, in france, romania, switzerland, spain, or the united states – sixteen locations in all are present in his work, scattered over two continents. in these locations where bruy travels with no more than his backpack, he photographs both nature, whose infinite nuances he meticulously captures, and habitats, disparate assemblages, characterised by their simplicity and rusticity. he also creates portraits of men and women who have chosen to isolate themselves in these places. publisher: editions xavier barral size: 190 x 240 mm 108 pages, 55 photographs ; -- -- archisable michel tréhet publisher’s description rooted in the tradition of the ephemeral art, evoking the native americans’ sand paintings, the tibetan mandalas or constantino nivola and le corbusier’s sand castings, archisable is first and foremost a poetical project, born two years ago on deauville’s beach. invited by tina dassault, 26 renowned architects have, one after the other, expressed themselves in front of elements. for every one of them, it has been the occasion to reconnect to the builder’s immemorial gestures, through spontaneous constructions, far from the comfort of their offices and their computers. the publication and the exhibition present a selection of photographs by michel tréhet, only traces of those ephemeral structures that vanish with the tide, in front of which the eye loses every reference point. by the magic of the standpoint, the sandcastles appear as mighty monuments. “the focus, the very close-up shot, the high- and the low-angle shot, penetrate to explore virgin universes. the loss of scale arises the stunning, and brings to light the barely-visible” (tina dassault) the architects that played the game : paul andreu, france, marc baranni, france, michel cantal-dupart, france, dominique châtelet, france, marie-hélène contal, france, jérôme damiens, france, dinah diwan, united states, patrice doat, france, frédéric druot, france, anne feenstra, netherlands, antoine grumbach, france, franck hammoutène, france, anne heringer et marc rauch, germany, dominique jakob et brendan mcfarlan, france, yann kersalé, france, didi pei, united states, jana revedin, austria, nathalie sabatier, france, léna soffer, france, roger taillibert, france, isabelle taourel, france, youssef tohmé, lebanon, bernard vaudeville, france, corinne vezzoni, france photographs michel tréhet texts - tina dassault, curator of the exhibition - franck nouchi, journalist at le monde - francis rambert, head of the architectural creation, cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine - patrice doat, architect, cofounder and scientific director of craterre publisher; editions xavier barral size: 246 x 173 mm 192 pages, 102 photographs ; -- -- rectangulo en la mano sergio larrain publisher’s description published in 1963, this book is sergio larrain's very first publication, that would soon become a seminal work for chilean and latin american photography. published in the cadernos brasileiros series, in collaboration with the poet and cultural attaché at the brazilian embassy thiago de mello, it subtly shows, through 44 pages, the photographer's vision of photography. for the first time, sergio larrain considered his work from a theoretical standpoint. "when i turn my gaze outward, camera in hand, i’m actually looking inward for pictures; i can only materialise that world of phantoms when i see something that resonates within me. visible reality, the root of photographic endeavour, is also one of the vertices rectangular interplay: rectangle in hand (the camera), i seek geometry. photograph: it (the subject), rendered geometrically". this definition, constructed like a syllogism and with a nod to the haiku, expresses the driving spirit that would reappear in his philosophical writings. republished as a fac-similé conform to the original, this version of el rectángulo en la mano, issued freely in a hardcover, with an essay by agnès sire, is a tribute to the chilean photographer's emblematic book. fac-similé of the 1963 original version publisher: editions xavier barral size: 120 x 180 mm 44 pages, 17 black & white photographs ; -- -- american interiors m l casteel publisher’s description american interiors depicts the psychological repercussions of war and military service through images of the interiors of cars owned by usa veterans. through working with veterans over a five year period, casteel became aware of the subtle indicators of past traumatic experience. he also recognised that the condition in which we live can often be a signifier of our well-being, and that even the state of car interiors can be seen as a manifestation of human interiors. american interiors explores the area between “the circumstantial and the evident” and it is in the space that separates the slickly produced military recruitment ads from the statistics about rates of veteran homelessness and suicide that this work resides. casteel balances the empathy he feels for those who have survived the military experience, with a deep sense of outrage towards america’s industrial military complex and the institutionalised violence of warfare. publisher: dewi lewis publishing size: 192 x 245mm 96 pages, 56 colour plates ; -- -- pompeii archive william wylie overseas deliveries please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates. publisher’s description handsomely illustrated and grand in scale, this book features images by american photographer william wylie (b. 1957) taken over the course of five years. the photographs reanimate the ancient city of pompeii, showing the ongoing cycles of deterioration and preservation that mark it as a living landscape. wylie captures pompeii’s former grandeur, including its terracotta reliefs and wall paintings, while also drawing attention to the signs of an active excavation site, from plaster casts in glass cases to ceramic fragments in storage facilities. his elegant compositions and command of light and shadow highlight how natural phenomena, pollution, and human intervention are continually reshaping the city. people, however, are notably absent in the photographs. wylie beautifully documents pompeii’s present by engaging with the tenuous relationship that the archaeological site maintains with the past. publisher: yale university press size: 279 x 324mm 120 pages, 83 duotone illustrations ; -- -- oh man lise sarfati publisher's description in her new book, lise sarfati takes us back to the oddly deserted heart of the city of los angeles. almost deserted... as lonesome men walk dispassionately through the streets, as if on a mission but without any obvious destination. the sun in oh man is high, the unifying emptiness of the street basked in the californian light. the nameless men’s random silhouettes stand out distinctively in front of the city’s characteristic urban backdrop, their central positioning lending them an extraordinary prominence in sarfati’s photographs. these images add up to a long, aloof traveling, devoid of any narrative and anecdotes, drifting by the evocative sharp lines and angles of the warehouses, the lettering and colors of a hopperian puritanism opening up the roads to the protagonists. these photographs were taken in 2012 and 2013. after carefully choosing her locations of interest, sarfati spent days waiting in full panoply for the right moment to manifest itself. publisher: steidl size: 290 x 330 mm 48 pages, 17 images isbn 978-3-95829-112-6 ; -- -- mexico between life and death harvey stein publisher's description during fourteen trips between 1993 and 2010, harvey stein photographed in mexico, primarily in small towns and villages and mostly during festivals (day of the dead, easter, independence day) that highlight the country’s unique relationship to death, myth, ritual and religion. this book is the definitive expression of stein’s intimate relationship with the people and culture of mexico. the images show fragments of what mexico is, a country of incredible contrasts and contradictions. mexico is about piercing light and deep shadow, of stillness and quick explosiveness, of massive tradition and creeping progress, of great religious belief but with corruption as a way of life. it is a land of ritual and legend, of vibrant life and dancing skeletons, a country next to the united states yet so far away, and with over 50 percent of its population under 20 years old but where old age is revered. in these masterful photographs, mexico – between life and death, stein explores these unsettling disparities. publisher: kehrer verlag size: 300 x 240 mm 176 pages, 157 duotone illustrations ; -- -- the magazine & the new photography: koga and japanese modernism satomi fujimura eri taniguchi overseas deliveries please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates. publisher’s description the new photography in japan, influenced by germany’s ‘neue sachlichkeit’, the new objectivity, and surrealism, differed strikingly from the pictorialism that had been the leading form of art photography prior to 1930. ‘koga’ was a small-press magazine that remained in print for less than two years, yet featured a number of amateur photographers, largely from the kansai region, who became a driving force behind the new photography movement. the catalogue for an exhibition featuring photographs printed in ‘koga’, this publication examines the influence of foreign photographers on the new photography and subsequent modes of photographic expression in japan. publisher: kokushokankokai size: 230 x 310 mm 234 pages japanese/english ; -- -- border | korea yusuke hishida publisher’s description how can a line on a map change the fate of so many people? north korea and south korea: a single group of people that not so long ago lived as one now leading completely separate realities on opposite sides of a military boundary known as the “38th parallel.” “border/korea” is an attempt to illustrate these two countries divided by a line drawn on a map, using delicately juxtaposed photos. separated by just 190 kilometers, the people in seoul and pyongyang each go about their daily lives. as the result of numerous choices made over the 70-plus years since the korean peninsula was divided. a single race of people who share the same names, speak the same language and look very much alike has been transformed into two worlds apart. the uniforms that students wear, the soldiers on opposite sides of the boundary line, the buses and subways they ride and the umbrellas they raise on rainy days. the babies born into these two worlds inevitably grow up with the values impressed on them by their distinct ways of life. publisher: libro arte size: 285 × 230 mm 120 pages ; -- -- an error has occurred rohan hutchinson publisher’s description an error has occurred is the major new book project by melbourne-based photographer rohan hutchinson. the publication is based around a core series of large-format photographs that hutchinson took during an expedition to the arctic in early 2017. the focus of the expedition was to record and document the beauty, immensity and diversity of the arctic landscape in this particular moment. upon returning to australia, hutchinson set about reinterpreting and expanding the scope of resulting photographs in a bid to respond to the impact of climate change on the arctic region and address our responsibilities not just as australians, but as global citizens. the final works comprise of two components. the first is a series of large-format photographs that capture the beauty, enormity, tonality and specificity of the winter landscape. the second is a series of physical and chemical reworkings of these photographic prints. executed in australia, this series saw hutchinson re-sensitise the original c-type photographs with photographic emulsion liquid and expose them to the harsh australian sun. paired with their originals, the works reveal a ravaged, blackened arctic landscape. the works act as both a poignant allegory for the global resonance of our actions and as a précis on the limits and potentials of the photographic medium, taking hutchinson’s research-based practice to new creative terrains in the process. publisher: perimeter editions size: 295 x 235 mm 48 pages edition of 700 ; -- -- jubilee mayumi hosokura publisher’s description the photobook jubilee consists of works by japanese photographer mayumi hosokura taken between 2012 and 2017. taken in east asian countries like japan, taiwan, china and more, hosokura’s images depict fragments of urban and rural landscapes, nude bodies, surfaces, textures, details and shapes. “the extraordinary skill and view to depict the delicate and fragile beauty of the subject matter has been acknowledged to be one of the most talented japanese female photographers of our age.[…] sometimes through the natural light or color filters, all the images are treated equally, yet transforming and being reborn within a very quiet but heated rhythm and beat underneath.” publisher: artbeat publishers size: 290 × 215 mm 108 pages ; -- -- the big cloud camille seaman publisher’s description our culture is addicted to weather: hourly forecasts, apps, radio, tv channels, alerts, warnings, and watches. and understandably---our food, clothing, livelihoods, and, increasingly, safety are tied directly to the weather and climate change. in the big cloud, photographer camille seaman stands in front of tornados, at the edges of lightning storms, and in pelting hail under pitch-black skies to capture supercells and mammatus clouds in their often sublime and terrifying splendor. in these awe-inspiring photographs, seaman's work is a potent reminder that there is no art more dramatic, in scale or emotion, than that created by nature. the big cloud includes an introduction by award-winning new yorker science writer and author alan burdick (out of eden, why time flies). publisher: princeton architectural press size: 254 × 203 mm 176 pages, 125 color illustrations ; -- -- drowned river mark klett & byron wolfe overseas deliveries please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates. publisher’s description in 1963 the waters began rising behind glen canyon dam and 170 miles of the colorado river slowly disappeared as the riverbed and surrounding canyons filled with water. those who supported and those who opposed the dam considered it a longterm transformation; environmentalists mourned glen canyon as dead and gone forever. but it’s coming back, in a victory that is also the pervasive disaster of climate change. there isn’t enough water in our new age, and so the world that drowned half a century ago is reappearing. byron wolfe, mark klett, and rebecca solnit spent half a decade exploring the place as expectations and possibilities changed and the river reemerged at the upper end of the reservoir. what they found is here in photographs and words. “lake powell and the wreckage of where it used to be and will never be again was the right place to think about the madness of the past and the terror of the future, even amidst the epiphanies of beautiful light and majestic space,” solnit writes. “we came to know the flat blue water the hard sunlight bounced off, the green water in shallower places, the water that turned red with the dust storms washed down from the sandstone landscape, the roiling waters of dirty devil creek pushing a wall of debris downstream after a deluge, the clear little streams and waterfalls in the side canyons whose lively movement died in the placid lake.” their starting point was eliot porter’s landmark book of color photography, the place no one knew: glen canyon the colorado, published by the sierra club in 1963 as a political statement about what had been lost under the dam’s waters and why it should never happen again. their ending point is the reemergence of the river and the rise of questions about climate, the fate of the southwest, the folly of human endeavors to control nature, and the possibility of seeing these places and problems in new ways. like previous collaborative work using historic images, klett and wolfe retrace the physical locations where porter made his photographs, now mostly submerged by the lake’s waters, often as deep as 400 feet beneath the surface. unlike previous projects, this work is not a rephotographic examination of his earlier sites or scenes; by necessity, this effort involves making entirely new images in response to the original porter works. solnit’s accompanying text meditates on meanings and histories, drawing from both the trio’s explorations of the place and archival research. drowned river is a book about climate change, but also about how photography can describe beauty and trouble simultaneously, about depth and shallowness, about what it takes to understand a place and to come to terms with the enormous scale of the changes we have set in motion. introduction by michael brune essay by rebecca solnit publisher: radius books size: 11.25 x 13” 212 pages, 80 images ; -- -- california captured marvin rand publisher’s description the style and mythology of mid-century modern california architecture as seen through the expert lens of marvin rand, los angeles photographer marvin rand created iconic images of some of the most celebrated architectural creations of his time, photographing buildings by the likes of modernist masters craig ellwood, louis kahn, and frank lloyd wright to capture the essence of their work - and, in doing so, played a critical role in shaping the mid-century california style now worshiped the world over. the discovery of rand's archive has brought a treasure trove to life, and california captured showcases it - and the period - as never before. publisher: phaidon size: 290 x 250 mm 240 pages, 240 illustrations ; -- bestsellers -- reverence (signed) jeffrey conley "this is an exquisite book in every way. the platinum prints are out of this world!" (customer review) publisher's description nazraeli press is pleased to present the publication of jeffrey conley's second monograph, reverence . beautifully printed in duotone on our special matt japanese art paper, this first edition is limited to 750 numbered and slipcased copies. jeffrey conley crafts each of his prints by utilizing two traditional darkroom methods, gelatin silver and platinum/palladium printing processes. as both the artist and the printer, conley’s first-hand technique creates a compendium of work that is as wide-ranging as it is intricate and intimate. the artist has, moreover, perfected the balance between simplicity and complexity, nuanced and bold. conley received his bfa in photographic studies at rochester institute of technology. he then moved to yosemite national park where he taught at the ansel adams gallery and spent years honing his craft. jeffrey conley has since been exhibited worldwide. his first book, winter , was published by nazraeli press in 2011 to wide acclaim and has since sold out. “for as long as i can remember i have felt most at peace outdoors. nature has always been my refuge and sanctuary. i find the natural world to be endlessly wondrous in its range of character and texture, from moments of delicate intimacy and subtlety to the massively expansive and powerful. nature is in constant change, and photography is particularly well suited to capture and amplify the swirling fluidity and the wonderfully serendipitous moments born of the ephemeral. photographing nature is a very specific kind of exercise in mindfulness; to be out in nature with senses responsive, keenly aware of circumstances and completely receptive, yielding to the present. the photographs in this exhibition represent some of my observations while investigating nature over these last several years; moments that represent my awe, wonder, and affinity towards our earth.” —jeffrey conley slipcased, 300 x 300mm, 64 pages, 50 duotone plates -- -- ravens masahisa fukase all reduced price copies in the spring 2018 sale have been sold. avalable at full price only. new edition from mack of this photobook classic (publication may 2017). masahisa fukase’s ravens (sometimes the solitude of ravens) was voted the best book of the last 25 years by the bjp’s panel of experts in 2010. as the last edition was published in 2008 and went quickly out of print, many photobook enthusiasts will not have seen a copy. mack are publishing a bilingual facsimile of the first hardback edition, accompanied by a booklet positioning it in the history of japanese photography and fukase’s work. the coastal landscapes of hokkaido serve as the backdrop for his profoundly dark and impressionistic photographs of flocks of crows. the work has been interpreted as an ominous allegory for postwar japan. as they were made in the immediate aftermath of fukase’s separation from his wife, who had been a central subject of his earlier photography, they can also be seen as foreshadowing his subsequent emotional and metal decline. sample images publisher's description consistently proclaimed as one of the most important photobooks in the history of the medium, solitude of ravens by japanese photographer masahisa fukase was first published in 1984 and the two subsequent editions have both been short runs and have sold out immediately. this bilingual facsimile of the first hardback edition is accompanied by a booklet positioning the body of work in the history of japanese photography and fukase’s oeuvre. fukase’s haunting series of work was made between 1975 and 1982 in the aftermath of a divorce and was apparently triggered by a mournful train journey to his hometown. the coastal landscapes of hokkaido serve as the backdrop for his profoundly dark and impressionistic photographs of ominous flocks of crows. the work has been interpreted as an ominous allegory for postwar japan. masahisa fukase (b. 1934, hokkaido; places accrue particular meanings according to the people she meets, what she sees, and by what's happening to her personally. each human encounter, sound and smell adds extra dimensions to her work and the resulting photographs. she dances on jackson marks a progression. stylistically similar to her previous work using black and white film and a large format camera, winship’s portraits remain arresting and unnerving but this body of work reveals her to also be a skilled landscape photographer. for winship photography is a process of literacy, a path by which she understands life. her intimate approach enables the reader to glimpse the world as she sees it, if only for a moment. publisher: mack books size: 240 x 270 mm 144 pages, 64 tritone plates -- -- the landscape paul wakefield sale copies sold out. full price only available. overseas deliveries please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates. publisher's description this is the latest book by british photographer paul wakefield. a long awaited monograph that includes photographs of both epic proportions and intimate detail. natural landscape is presented through the five different sections : shorelines, rockscapes, drylands, woodlands, and snowscapes. paul’s work combines a classic landscape tradition with a contemporary sensibility and reflects his life long passion for the natural world. paul wakefield was born and grew up in hong kong and has worked continuously on his own landscape projects while using his vision of landscape on advertising commissions. he has published four books previously, three of which were with jan morris, reknowned author of travel literature. see here for selected images. publisher: envisage books size: 290 x 365 mm 128 pages, 80 full-colour images -- -- st kilda: the silent islands alex boyd publisher's description rising up dramatically from the atlantic ocean, the island archipelago of st kilda is often celebrated as the most remote location in the british isles. forty miles from the outer hebrides, the main island of hirta contains the highest sea cliffs in uk, and the remains of a village famous for its evacuation of 1930. while this marked the end of a way of life, the islands have often been obscured in myth and romance. with a series of images made over several years, and following many visits out to the islands using a camera which once belonged to fay godwin, alex boyd’s new book seeks to challenge these perceptions. documenting the wild and now deserted landscape of the island of st kilda, boyd illuminates much about the island’s shadowy history and about the communities which have inhabited it. this book of stunning photography contains a preface by murdo macdonald hrsa, a hard-hitting essay on the myth and reality of st kilda by the islands’ archaeologist, dr kevin grant, and poetry by the acclaimed gerry cambridge. publisher: luath press -- -- william neill photographer - a retrospective (collector'sedition) william neill customer review: "top in his field - if you had all the talent in the world and 40 years to make astounding photos, this book would be the result." customer review (norman mccloskey): “this book from william neill is simply stunning and if you only ever had one landscape book this would be enough to cover it all.” overseas deliveries please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates. customer review: "top in his field - if you had all the talent in the world and 40 years to make astounding photos, this book would be the result." overseas deliveries . please note that, as this is a heavy item, overseas postage will be charged at twice our standard rates . publisher's description this retrospective book covering william neill’s extensive career will feature images, many never published before, from his very early years with a camera in the 1970s through four decades including very recent work created in the past year. photographs included are from his antarctica series; an in-depth look at the “landscapes of the spirit” work; a black and white portfolio; a series of patterns in nature imagery; and a portfolio of impressionistic, camera motion work; and last but not least, an extensive collection of yosemite photographs. a true collector’s piece from this master of american landscape photography about the photographer a resident of the yosemite national park area since 1977, william is a landscape photographer concerned with conveying the deep, spiritual beauty he sees and feels in nature. neill’s award-winning photography has been widely published in books, magazines, calendars, posters, and his limited-edition prints have been collected and exhibited in museums and galleries nationally, including the museum of fine art boston, santa barbara museum of art, the vernon collection, and the polaroid collection. neill received a ba degree in environmental conservation at the university of colorado. in 1995, neill received the sierra club’s ansel adams award for conservation photography. publisher: triplekite publishing size:295 x 295mm 224 pages, 151 illustrations -- -- american colour 1962–1965 tony ray jones publisher's description american colour 1962–1965 is a carefully edited selection of previously unpublished tony ray-jones colour photographs from the earliest period of his work. taken from the extensive archives held at the national media museum in bradford by liz jobey, this book brings together the early experiments that would inform his later work. ray-jones arrived in america in 1961 on a scholarship to yale to study graphic art and he returned to england four years later. it was in america that he learned to be a photographer. among new york’s street parades, on fifth avenue, in times square, chinatown and little italy he learned to extract individual moments from a crowded backdrop and to find order in the chaos of the street. based in new york, he made trips across the country – west to detroit, south to florida – all the time making colour pictures alongside the black and white images for which he would later became known. ray-jones later referred to these early photographs as ‘isolated sketches’, and they were clearly a part of his formative experience. at the time colour was considered vulgar and not the medium of serious photography, but for ray-jones it expressed the excitement of america in a way that black and white could not. 'i found america a very colour-conscious country,' he said. 'colour is very much part of their culture, and they use it in crazy ways. you look down madison avenue at lunchtime and the colours just vibrate.' publisher: mack size:200 x 200 mm 80 pages, 45 colour plates -- -- remote scottish postboxes (signed) martin parr publisher's description remote scottish postboxes is martin parr’s first major contribution to landscape photography. between 2004 - 2010, parr and his wife holidayed on the scottish mainland and outlying islands of orkney, shetland, barra, lewis and islay, stopping frequently to capture the local postboxes. through parr’s photographs, these isolated, red outposts of civilisation each take on a character and personality of their own, against the lonely yet beautiful scottish backdrop. “when you are in the middle of nowhere, in a bleak landscape and in wild weather, these little post boxes are strangely comforting, a sign that other people are around, that life is going on, and that you are connected to the world” - susie parr remote scottish postboxes is presented in two ways; as a hand- stitched, 88 page book, in which the postboxes are accompanied by maps and co-ordinates of their locations and featuring a short text by susie parr, and as a postcards book , comprised of 12 unbound postcards. both books are designed by victoria forrest and are presented in a specially produced box. publisher: rrb photobooks size: 280 x 240 mm (book), 285 x 245 x 25 mm (box) 88 pages -- -- waffenruhe michael schmidt publisher's description in contrast to the consciously sober - but far from clinical images of his earlier series, schmidt uses atmosphere-laden details with high-contrast black-and-white images of cityscapes, details in nature, and portraits in "waffenruhe" to create a subjective, leaden picture of a still-divided city. he no longer deploys the techniques of pure documentation, but brings together surprising combinations of images to express a generation's dystopian sense of life shortly before the fall of the wall. schmidt evokes a world of ruptures and absences that eschews a confident, comprehensive point of view. the images work with schleef's text to create a brusque, entirely individual perspective on the fragility of human existence. the first edition, published in 1987 by the berlin-based dirk nishen verlag quickly sold out and continues to fetch high prices on the antiquarian book market. thirty years later, "waffenruhe" is now being reprinted. this artist's book - often included on lists of the most influential photographic books of all time - is once again being made available. size: 265 x 300 mm 82 pages -- shopping cart you have no items in your shopping cart. newsletter email: subscribe unsubscribe wait... information about us contact us blog events viewed products shipping & returns terms & conditions newsletter archive sitemap about us blog sitemap shipping & returns terms & conditions powered by nopcommerce copyright © 2018 . all rights reserved.
